Patronal Feast day at the Holy Optina Elders Mission in Des Plaines, Illinois
Moved to the nearest weekend by necessity, Saturday and Sunday October 16 & 17, the Russian Orthodox Mission of the Holy Elders of Optina celebrated its Feast Day with the arrival of Archbishop Andronik of North America and New York. The Mission is located about 30 minutes from the city of Chicago in the Northwest suburbs. It consists of a large spacious rented room in a Bulgarian school in downtown Des Plaines.
This was the very first visit to the parish by the Archbishop. His Eminence was greeted warmly by the Rector Fr. David, Mat. Kristina and other parishioners with the traditional presentation of Bread and Salt. Many guests were also present from Michigan and New York at the All Night Vigil.
The following morning, services began with the Archbishop’s entrance followed by the Hours and Divine Liturgy. Serving as subdeacons were guest reader Nickolai Klestov and Fr David’s son – Symeon. Matushka Kristina led the choir singing in both English and church slavonic interchangeably. At the end of the service “Many Years!” was sung for the rector, choir, sisterhood and all parishioners. The sisterhood prepared an abundant luncheon right afterward. Warm exchanges were shared amongst all present. It was a great blessing for all who were able to attend.
Holy Optina Fathers pray for us!
